HOW TO AVOID MAKING MISTAKES DURING YOUR NYSC REGISTRATION

According to nysc.gov.ng, “The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil War. The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by Decree No. 24 of 22nd May 1973, which stated that the NYSC is being established ‘with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity.’”

There is always a certain excitement in the air whenever NYSC registration draws nearer. Many graduates from higher institutions of learning are already on the ground, anticipating the commencement of registration. On the set date, the website is usually slow because of the massive traffic it receives. As early as 1 AM on the set date, interested candidates are already navigating the website, struggling to meet up with the required number of corps members needed for that batch.

It is indeed a struggle for many. Some even go as far as sleeping in cybercafés overnight just to meet up with the registration. It is during this rush that many candidates make certain errors that affect them in the long run. Some end up being sent back home from camp, which can be a very painful experience.

I had a friend who was sent home all the way from Adamawa to Edo State. The journey was over 15 hours, and she had to make it within two days. After going through all the stress of the journey, she was sent back home. It was really unbearable. She cried as much as she could, but nothing could be done to remedy her situation. She had spent a huge amount of money preparing for the trip, in addition to the hours spent on the highway. She also had consumables that she had prepared to supplement the regular camp meals.

The NYSC camp protocols are strict and are strictly adhered to. They are not bent for anyone. If you do not meet the requirements at the point of registration and still go ahead to navigate your way through, or you unknowingly make a mistake during registration, you could be sent back home.

Most times, these mistakes might be caused by café operators who are in a haste to attend to more clients, so they end up doing a bad job. Some of these mistakes can actually go beyond the camp process. By this, I mean you can make a mistake during the account-opening phase and end up not receiving your monthly allowance.

There are many mistakes that graduates make during NYSC registration, and this article will focus on those mistakes and how they can be resolved.

1. Choosing “Sign In” Instead of “Sign Up”

The very first obstacle that a prospective corps member can encounter is the mistake of choosing the option that says Sign In instead of Sign Up. Even though this may seem impossible, I myself encountered this problem because I was overexcited. The joy of registering for NYSC overwhelmed me, so I just chose Sign In. Then I was stuck because I did not have the details the site was requesting from me.

It was then that I had to put myself together and begin the whole process again. Another thing that caused this mistake for me was that I was in a haste to beat the traffic on the website and register quickly.

2. Entering the Wrong Year of Graduation

Another mistake that is often made by prospective corps members during registration is entering the wrong year of graduation. If the year of graduation on a graduate’s Statement of Result does not match the one used when filling out the NYSC online form, it can affect the corps member when he or she gets to camp.

That singular mistake has sent many corps members back home from camp. This mistake is mostly made out of ignorance of the proper orientation from the host school. Every student ought to be aware that the year of graduation is the year written on the Statement of Result or certificate.

Many graduates go ahead and enter the year they wrote their last paper in school, and this has caused many problems in camp. So, if you wrote your last paper in 2021 but your Statement of Result was issued in 2026, your official year of graduation is therefore 2026, which is what will be written on your Statement of Result. That is what you are supposed to upload on your NYSC portal during registration.

3. Incorrect Arrangement of Names

Arrangement of names is another mistake made by many people during NYSC registration. This arises due to the inability of many graduates to differentiate between their first name, middle name, and last name.

This mistake is not peculiar to NYSC registration alone. On any form that requires names to be written specifically in this format, many people tend to arrange them wrongly. A common issue is confusion between the first name and last name or between the last name and middle name.

Your first name, in most cases, is the name that you are mostly called by your parents. It is the very first name that you were given, not your father’s name. Your middle name is the name that comes after your first name.

For example, a child is born and named Emeka. His mother then says, “Let us add another name for him,” and they add John. In his birth name, Emeka is now written as the first name, while John is written as the middle name.

The last name is your father’s name. It is most often called the surname, and it can come last or first, depending on how the document requests it.

A lot of people make the mistake of not knowing the difference between these three name formats — first name, middle name, and last name. They end up placing them in the wrong locations during registration, and this can become a problem in the long run.

This issue of name arrangement can vary. So, if you get it right on your National Identity Card but do not get it right in your JAMB, WAEC, NECO, or BVN records, it can become a problem for you in camp. It is important that your name arrangement is properly checked and corrected before registration to prevent these issues.

4. Inconsistent Date of Birth

Furthermore, the issue of an inconsistent date of birth also has to be reviewed. It is widely known that people over 30 years of age cannot go for service, so some people might want to beat this age limit and end up having inconsistencies in their dates of birth across different documents.

It might not even be a case of trying to beat the 30-year age barrier. It can also be a common error in certificates. Whichever the case, if the date of birth in the documents of a prospective corps member does not tally, such a corps member might encounter problems in the long run.

He or she could be sent back home during the screening of documents in camp, or it might cause issues during the account-opening phase.

During registration, candidates should endeavour to make sure that every inconsistency in their date of birth is corrected and that a single, accurate date of birth is used across their official documents.

5. Misspelling Your Name

While processing your NYSC registration, it is important to carefully observe the spelling of your name. A single misspelled name can cause problems in the long run, and rectifying such a mistake can be very difficult.

Such an applicant might have to wait until the next registration batch to be able to register properly if the mistake is detected late.

During the application, prospective corps members should carefully scan through the application form and ensure that their names are correctly spelt and properly arranged. They should also cross-check the names on their other relevant documents.

HOW CAN WE AVOID THESE MISTAKES?

Navigating NYSC online registration smoothly requires careful preparation to avoid common mistakes that can delay your deployment or cause issues at the orientation camp.

Key Tips to Avoid NYSC Registration Mistakes

  • Confirm Your Details on the Senate List: Before going to register, check that your institution has uploaded your details correctly on the NYSC Senate List. Verify that the spelling of your name, course of study, and date of graduation match your official school documents.
  • Ensure Name Consistency (NIN vs. Senate List): The name on your National Identification Number (NIN) should align with the name submitted by your school. Discrepancies can cause problems during registration.
  • Upload a Standard Passport Photograph: Use a clear passport-style photograph with a plain white or off-white background. Ensure your face is clearly visible and avoid dark glasses or face-covering headgear.
  • Complete Biometrics Yourself: Never attempt biometric (thumbprint) capture by proxy. Complete the registration and biometric process yourself.
  • Use an Active, Accessible Email Address: Use an active email address that you can access throughout the registration process. Always check your Spam or Junk folder if a confirmation link takes time to arrive.
  • Select a Competent Cyber Café / Operator: Use an experienced café operator who understands the NYSC registration process to avoid accidental submission of incorrect information or documents.
  • Avoid Peak Rush Hours: The portal may experience heavy traffic when registration opens. Where possible, consider registering during less busy periods to reduce delays.
  • Upload Special Exemption Documents Correctly:
    • Married Women: Upload the required marriage and change-of-name documents, as well as evidence relating to the husband’s place of residence, where applicable.
    • Medical Conditions: Upload genuine medical reports from recognised government or military hospitals when requesting consideration on health grounds.
