NECO Result Checker: A Comprehensive Guide to the 2026 SSCE Results

The NECO result checker is the official online platform candidates use to access their National Examinations Council examination results.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) is Nigeria’s federal examination body responsible for conducting major secondary-school examinations, including the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE). NECO’s SSCE is conducted for both school candidates through the SSCE Internal examination and private candidates through the SSCE External examination.

For candidates who sat the 2026 SSCE Internal examination, the results have now been released and can be checked online through the official NECO results portal.

The 2026 NECO SSCE Internal examination was conducted from 15 June to 23 July 2026 across Nigeria and selected international centres.

The results were officially released on Thursday, 24 September 2026, with NECO Registrar/Chief Executive Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi announcing the results at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. The results were released 63 days after the final examination paper.

According to figures announced by NECO, 1,378,048 candidates registered for the examination, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually sat for it.

The examination was conducted in the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory and six foreign countries: Benin Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Niger Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Saudi Arabia.

2026 NECO Result Performance Statistics

The major figures announced for the 2026 SSCE Internal examination include:

  • Candidates registered: 1,378,048
  • Candidates who sat for the examination: 1,371,992
  • Candidates who obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics: 804,948 (58.67%)
  • Candidates who obtained five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics: 1,162,118 (84.70%)
  • Candidates involved in examination malpractice: 1,406
  • Candidates with special needs who sat for the examination: 334

The 58.67% figure represents a decline from the 60.26% recorded in 2025 for candidates who obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. In 2025, 818,492 candidates met that benchmark.

At the same time, 84.70% of candidates achieved at least five credits when English Language and Mathematics were not required as part of the five-credit benchmark.

What the 2026 NECO Results Show

One of the clearest points from the results is the difference between the overall five-credit figure and the stricter five-credit benchmark that includes English Language and Mathematics.

While 84.70% of candidates obtained five credits and above irrespective of English Language and Mathematics, 58.67% met the benchmark that specifically included both subjects. This means that performance in the two core subjects remains an important issue for a significant number of candidates.

The 2026 examination also recorded a substantial reduction in reported examination malpractice.

NECO reported 1,406 candidates involved in examination malpractice in 2026, compared with 3,878 in 2025. The Council said this represented a 64.74% reduction.

NECO has continued to introduce technology into its examination processes, including computer-based examination components, alongside measures intended to improve examination administration and integrity.

Areas That Need Improvement

The performance figures point to several areas that deserve continued attention.

English Language and Mathematics

The difference between the 84.70% general five-credit figure and the 58.67% figure that includes English Language and Mathematics shows that many candidates who obtain several credits may still struggle to meet the benchmark involving the two core subjects.

Schools and parents can respond by providing continuous support in literacy and numeracy rather than waiting until the final months before an examination.

Regular assessments, remedial lessons, improved teaching materials and stronger teacher development can also help students build these skills earlier.

Teaching and Learning Quality

Examination results are closely connected to what students experience in the classroom.

Schools need adequate learning materials, qualified teachers, effective lesson delivery and regular assessment. Where students consistently struggle in particular subjects, schools should identify those difficulties early and provide targeted support.

Digital Examination Readiness

As NECO continues to expand computer-based examination processes, students also need basic digital skills.

Schools can help candidates become familiar with computer-based testing, typing, navigating digital examination interfaces and managing time during computer-based assessments.

Examination Integrity

The reported reduction in malpractice cases is another important development in the 2026 results.

Students should avoid examination malpractice and rely on proper preparation. Schools, parents and examination authorities also have a role to play in creating an environment where candidates can prepare and sit for examinations without relying on fraudulent assistance.

NECO Result Checker: How to Check Your 2026 Result Online

Candidates who sat the 2026 SSCE Internal examination can check their results through the official NECO results portal.

Official result portal: results.neco.gov.ng

The official portal currently requires candidates to select their examination year and examination type, enter their token and registration number, and then click the result-checking button.

What You Need

Before checking your result, have the following available:

  • Your NECO examination or registration number
  • Your NECO result-checking token
  • The examination year
  • The correct examination type
  • A phone, tablet or computer with internet access

Steps to Check Your NECO Result

  1. Open your browser and visit the official NECO results portal: https://results.neco.gov.ng/
  2. Select the appropriate examination year.
  3. Select the appropriate examination type, such as SSCE Internal where applicable.
  4. Enter your result-checking token.
  5. Enter your registration number.
  6. Click Check Result.
  7. Wait for your result to load.

If the information entered is correct and your result is available, your NECO result will be displayed.

Candidates should save a copy of their result for their records. However, keep in mind that a result displayed online may not always be the same document required for formal admission or employment verification. Institutions may request official verification through NECO’s e-Verify system.

How to Buy a NECO Result-Checking Token

NECO has moved result checking to a digital token system rather than the traditional physical scratch-card method.

If you do not already have a token, use the Purchase Token option on the official results portal. The current NECO results portal displays an option for candidates who do not have a token to purchase one.

The general process is:

  1. Visit the official NECO results portal.
  2. Select Purchase Token.
  3. Create an account or log in where required.
  4. Follow the payment instructions provided on the official portal.
  5. Complete the payment.
  6. Obtain your token.
  7. Return to the result-checking page and enter the token together with your registration number.

Important: Do not rely on random websites, social-media sellers or unofficial agents for result-checking tokens. Always confirm the current price and payment instructions directly on the official NECO platform because charges and payment arrangements can change.

Is the NECO Result Checker Free?

The result-checking portal itself is available online, but candidates need a valid result-checking token to access their results.

Because NECO can change its token price and payment arrangements, candidates should check the official portal for the current price before making payment rather than relying on old prices circulating online.

What If Your NECO Result Does Not Show?

If your result does not appear after entering your details, first check that:

  • You selected the correct examination year.
  • You selected the correct examination type.
  • Your registration number is correct.
  • Your token was entered correctly.
  • Your internet connection is working properly.

If the problem continues, use the support information provided on the official NECO platform.

The official result portal currently lists support@neco.gov.ng as its support email.

Candidates should avoid paying unofficial individuals who claim they can “release” or “upgrade” a missing result.

NECO Result Verification

Checking a result is different from formally verifying a result.

NECO operates an e-Verify Result Verification System for individuals and institutions that need result confirmation. The system can be used for result verification and confirmation, while institutions can also use it for bulk verification and other official processes.

This can be particularly relevant when a university, employer or other organisation requests formal confirmation of a candidate’s NECO result.

What the 2026 NECO Result Means for Candidates

Candidates who achieved the required grades can proceed with their next stage of education or other plans, depending on the requirements of the institution or programme they intend to pursue.

Candidates who did not obtain the required combination of credits should check the specific requirements of their intended institution or programme and consider the available examination options where necessary.

Requirements can differ between institutions and programmes, so candidates should confirm admission requirements directly with the institution they intend to apply to rather than relying on general information shared online.

Advice for Candidates and Parents

Candidates and parents should keep important examination information secure, including registration numbers, examination slips and result-checking details.

Do not share your result-checking token unnecessarily, especially with strangers or unverified agents.

Most importantly, candidates should rely on official NECO platforms for result information, payments and verification.

Official NECO result checker: NECO Results Portal

The 2026 SSCE results provide a mixed picture: the proportion achieving five credits including English Language and Mathematics fell from the previous year’s level, while the Council reported a substantial reduction in examination malpractice. For candidates, the immediate priority is to check their individual results through the official NECO result checker and understand the requirements for their next educational step.

Always use NECO’s official platforms for the latest information about results, tokens, verification and examination-related services.
