Its work centres on research, innovation and creating better livelihood opportunities for Nigerians.

The University Research Grant forms part of this mission by providing financial support to students conducting research with the potential to generate practical solutions.

The 2026 edition continues the Centre’s focus on supporting young researchers. The funding can help final-year students complete research projects that may otherwise be limited by financial constraints.

The grant is designed to support research that can contribute to areas such as policy development, micro-enterprise support, rural livelihoods, financial inclusion and technological development.

The programme is associated with the slogan “Research for a Stronger Nigeria”, reflecting its focus on connecting research, innovation and national development.

Grooming Centre Research Grant 2026 Funding Structure

The total funding available under the 2026 programme is ₦20 million, distributed between undergraduate and postgraduate researchers.

The funding structure is:

100 undergraduate students will receive ₦100,000 each.

50 postgraduate students will receive ₦200,000 each.

150 students will receive funding in total.

The different award amounts reflect the varying requirements of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.

The grant is intended to support legitimate research expenses, including data collection, research materials, fieldwork-related transportation, analysis tools and other approved project costs. Recipients are expected to use the funds responsibly and in line with their approved research proposals.

Supported Research Areas

Applicants must propose research that falls within, or closely relates to, the thematic areas prioritised by the Grooming Centre.

The supported areas include:

Financial inclusion

Microfinance

Rural development

Social enterprise

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)

Technological development

Digital finance

Youth in development

Women in development

Research aimed specifically at lifting people out of poverty

These areas cover issues affecting economic opportunity and development across Nigeria.

For example, research into financial inclusion or digital finance can examine ways of expanding access to financial services.
